This week, women’s health apps dominated the headlines — and not just for their glossy promises. From data privacy concerns to questionable medical claims, it’s clear that many of these platforms are built more for scale than for service.

But behind the tech story lies a deeper, quieter issue that almost no one is addressing:

What does peak performance really look like for women — not just at one stage of life, but across the entire arc of womanhood?

And why are we still measuring it with metrics that weren’t made for us?

Still Using Male Metrics in a Female Body

Most performance and productivity models are built around male physiology:

  • Linear energy cycles

  • Stable hormone baselines

  • Predictable stress responses

But female biology is cyclical, not linear. Hormonal fluctuations across a woman’s lifespan affect not just fertility, but metabolism, cognition, mood, immunity, and physical resilience.

Even today, the vast majority of medical research still uses men as the default. According to a 2021 report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office, women are underrepresented in 70% of clinical drug trials — and when included, results are rarely disaggregated by sex.

So when women find themselves exhausted, burnt out, or feeling “off,” it’s not because they’re failing.

It’s because the system was never designed with their biology in mind.

What I’ve Seen Across the Stages of a Woman’s Life

As a doctor, military medic, and advisor to high-performing women — from executives to medics to founders — I’ve witnessed firsthand how performance is redefined (not diminished) at every stage of a woman’s life.

Early Career: Overperformance in Survival Mode

Society often idealizes women’s 20s and early 30s as “peak years.” But for many, these are the years of chronic overdrive.

Women are:

  • Working 20% harder to prove themselves (Harvard Business Review, 2020)

  • Navigating menstrual irregularities, PMS, and hormonal imbalances

  • Masking insecurity while internalizing impossible standards

They’re “pushing through” cycles, often working against their biology instead of with it.

Motherhood: Performing While Rebuilding

Maternity is another so-called “performance dip” — but what if it’s actually a redefinition of elite endurance?

  • Over 85% of postpartum women report significant sleep disruption for up to 6 months after birth (Sleep Medicine Reviews, 2021)

  • Hormonal fluctuations (e.g. estrogen dropping 1000x within days after delivery) impact cognition and mood regulation

Despite this, working mothers are often expected to return to pre-pregnancy performance levels — physically, emotionally, and professionally — without adequate time or support.

Yet this is also a kind of peak performance: sustaining another life while holding your own together.

Single or Child-Free Women: The Invisible Load

The myth of freedom often shrouds the challenges single or child-free women face. Many are:

  • Primary breadwinners

  • Managing aging parents or other family responsibilities

  • Carrying disproportionate emotional labor — yet unrecognized in data or workplace policy

Their load is heavy, but invisible — and the metrics of success don’t count the weight they carry.

Midlife: The Skin-Deep Crisis

Perimenopause begins, on average, at age 45, but many women begin noticing subtle cognitive and metabolic changes even earlier.
Hot flashes, brain fog, fatigue — symptoms often dismissed as "aging" or "stress" — are actually biological transitions.

A study in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that 60% of midlife women experience performance-related disruption due to hormonal shifts — yet few receive adequate support.

In my past dermatology work, I saw women come in for aesthetic changes — but what they often needed wasn’t filler. It was a mirror that reflected who they had become, and guidance to rebuild performance from that point forward.

Post-Menopause & Later Life: The Forgotten Chapter

Women over 50 are living longer, working longer, and leading more than ever before. And yet, they’re routinely excluded from wellness and performance discourse.

This life stage brings wisdom, power, and clarity — but also:

  • Higher cardiovascular risk (post-menopause, heart disease risk catches up with men)

  • Ongoing financial and caregiving responsibilities

  • Invisible battles with chronic pain, inflammation, or late-diagnosed conditions like ADHD

Performance here isn't about hustle. It's about longevity, adaptability, and wisdom-led leadership. And it deserves tools and metrics that respect that.

Why the Metrics Must Change

We are still benchmarking success on male baselines:

  • Energy output measured linearly

  • Productivity defined by external gain, not sustainable performance

  • Health apps focused on steps, macros, or cortisol, not hormonal intelligence

And most so-called "women’s health" apps? They still carry deep gaps:

  • Only 3% of digital health funding goes to female-focused solutions (Rock Health, 2023)

  • Many cycle-tracking apps sell data to third parties, with minimal oversight or transparency

  • Most lack integration with clinical-grade hormonal insight or performance frameworks

The Real Definition of Peak Performance for Women

True peak performance isn’t about maintaining a single high point.
It’s about evolving with precision and self-awareness across the hormonal, emotional, and professional shifts that shape us.

It’s about performance that’s:

  • Cyclical, not linear

  • Rooted in body literacy

  • Adaptable to season, stage, and identity

And above all — it’s about using metrics that reflect the full reality of womanhood.
